After severing ties with LinkedInTwitter inadvertently helped opponent Facebook snag 1000% more page referrals from the professional social network.

PageLever, an analytics tool for Facebook pages, points to Twitter’s June 29 decision to stop syncing updates with LinkedIn as an explanation for the spike.

“The spike happened because without Twitter, there is now a significantly lower volume of content in the LinkedIn News Feed, and therefore less competition for clicks and attention,” Brendan Irvine-Broque, PageLever’s director of growth, tells Mashable in an email. “So any non-Twitter content (including links to Facebook Pages and Page Posts) is performing much better than before.”

Irvine-Broque adds that the spike happened “immediately after the change.”

Today, Twitter announced all-new header photos, which appear to be rather similar to those Facebook introduced some months ago and that Google+ also uses. In Twitter’s case, the argument for the introduction and inclusion of such images is to “make your presence on Twitter more meaningful”, and to “help you get to know people better through their pictures,” according to Product Manager Sachin Agarwal. The reality is the profile now takes up more space, forcing down tweets. Worse, Silktide founder Oliver Embarton argued Twitter’s poor design potentially makes it harder, not easier, to discover more about someone:

Assuming you already have a Twitter account dedicated to your small business, you should also be investing in hashtags as part of your social media strategy.

But let’s back up a bit, in case you’re unsure what a hashtag even is in the first place. Designated by a number sign (#), the hashtag is paired with a word or phrase to perform a variety of functions. Twitter users attach hashtags to tweets as search mechanisms, categorizing tools and marketing tactics.

In your business’ case, you may choose to attach a hashtag, such as #smallbiz, or even your brand’s name itself, as #nike might do. This improves the chance that other Twitter users will find your tweet in targeted Twitter searches. But hashtags also streamline your own processes. For instance, you may ask users to include a unique hashtag in their own tweets as part of your newest Twitter marketing campaign. Throughout your campaign, the hashtag files tweets for easy search and organization within Twitter.com.

Now that you’re familiar with the basic hashtag concept, let’s apply principles specific to small businesses. Follow these five tips to improve your brand’s hashtag strategy.

Twitter has launched a new tool that enables you to embed interactive timelines on any website. According to the company, the tool provides the means to place any public timeline on any page. “With one line of HTML you can deliver any account’s tweets, favourites, a list, search query or hashtag directly to your website,” explained Twitter’s Sylvain Carle.

The timelines work much like the Twitter website, providing the means for visitors to reply, retweet, follow and tweet directly, but without leaving the page.

The bulk of the companies here at the Republican National Convention are traditional media firms with dedicated spaces for their reporters to crank out stories about the big event. Then there are Twitter and Facebook. The two social media outfits are sharing a space upstairs and around the corner from a much larger area rented out by Bloomberg.

And why not? More and more, when people look for political information or post politics-related content, they do it on both platforms. The company names are synonymous with social media, and that’s partially why Twitter and Facebook decided to bunk together here at the RNC.

“We’re both here with the same mission. Our goals here are the same – to facilitate open engagement,” said Adam Sharp, who heads up Government, News, and Social Innovation at Twitter. “Obviously our companies have ways in which we compete, but it’s not a zero sum game,” continued Sharp.

Meanwhile Google – one of the only other “non-media” firms here (if it can still be called that) – has taken over a massive space on the main floor of the Tampa Convention Center, complete with primary colored walls, interactive experiences, and a coffee bar dishing out free cappuccinos for the caffeine-quaffing journalists embedded nearby.

People tend to start with the most well known, i.e. Facebook or Twitter, or they set up profiles on lots of different platforms and then struggle to keep them updated. This is what I would call a ‘tools first’ approach and it should be avoided if you want to get the best out of your social media activity.

There are two problems with this approach. First, you’re making an assumption that your target audience is actually using the platform. And second, if you are working with a small team, or on your own, it’s going to be a struggle to keep all of your profiles and pages effectively updated.

Before you do anything, start with your objectives; what are you trying to achieve? Do you want to drive traffic to your site? If so, which page do you want to drive them to? Or maybe you want to use social media to help drive new business enquiries or to position yourself as an expert in a particular subject.

Being clear on what you’re trying to achieve will make it much more likely that you will be successful.

Twitter could be planning a major update to its search and discovery feature later today, according to one of its employees.

Twitter’s Pankaj Gupta, who runs the company’s Personalization and Recommender Systems, sent out a tweet yesterday congratulating his team on an improvement to its search and discovery tools that, he says, will dramatically change the service.

“Search and discovery in Twitter [is] set to change forever after tomorrow,” Gupta tweeted. “Team — congrats and enjoy the enormity of your impact few understand today.”

Twitter has quickly realized that improving the user’s ability to access relevant information from the service is a key component in its future.
