Thursday’s sporadic Twitter outages gave addicts like us the shakes. After all, Twitter users average over 100,000 tweets per minute, and the site was down for a whole lot longer than that.

Twitter is far from the only channel through which web users funnel data. Business intelligence company DOMO paired up with Column Five Media to create this infographic, which shows just how much data is generated every minute.

Next time you run a Google search, think about the fact that it’s just one of 2 million that Google will receive in that minute. In the same amount of time, Facebook users post 684,478 pieces of content. Crazier still, online shoppers spend an average of $272,070 every minute. That’s over $391 million every day — quite the chunk of change.

Social media is constantly evolving, and with this evolution, there are more opportunities than not to misstep. A campaign on social media has hundreds of ways it can go wrong, and most of them are unpredictable. Of course, it’s important to be as prepared as possible, but sometimes, social media fails are bound to happen. After all, we’re only humans managing accounts for brands, right? Few brands have tested the sometimes scurrilous terrain that is Twitter advertising more than McDonald’s. The brand has occupied the Promoted Trend spot nine times since November 2010, buying an ad unit that Twitter says costs $120,000 per day.

And whether it’s social media users questioning the “meatiness” of the McRib sandwich, turning #McDStories into ugly tales, or having urban dictionary fun with #Shamrocking, the burger chain has earned its social media stripes. Through the events, it’s appeared impervious, as consumers have at times run wild with its Twitter conversations.

In the blogosphere, the campaigns have stirred discussion on whether or not all social buzz is created equally. So ClickZ News interviewed McDonald’s social media director Rick Wion to get his behind-the-hash-tags take on Twitter.

“As a brand,” Wion said, “we know that sometimes critics will take shots, but our primary focus will always be on fans and engaging with customers.”

In February 12% of all cable TV related  social actions were MTV related and in a breakdown of Fall 2011 MTV shows  and characters comprised  14% share of Voice in the Cable Industry. In August 2011 the VMA’s  helped MTV dominate the cable category with 51% voice share which inlcluded a tweet per second records of Beyonce baby bump and a 30 year ratings , which was  a record for the network.

Facebook posts made by retail brands during the overnight hours of 8 PM to 7 AM drive 20% more user engagement, in terms of like and comment rates, than posts made between 8 AM and 7 PM, according to a new report from Buddy Media.
