Recent finding by Nielsen on travel related app usage show that U.S. Android and iOS users spent 95 percent of their time accessing travel information from travel apps, versus only 5 percent from the mobile Web during JUne 2012.. This discrepancy was largely driven by Google Maps—the top Travel category app and mobile website during June—which accounted for 78 percent of all mobile time spent on Travel.

A YouTube spokesman downplayed the blockage: “After tonight’s live stream ended, YouTube briefly showed an incorrect error message,” he said via e-mail. ” Neither the live stream nor any of the channel’s videos were affected.”

It’s not clear what he meant by none of the channel’s videos were affected as the video was unplayable.

The most likely culprit is YouTube’s pre-emptive content filters, which allow large media companies to upload content they claim to own and automatically block videos that an algorithm decides matches their own. That would make the glitch the second livestream copyright-policing snafu in the span of a few days: On Sunday, a similar algorithm at uStream interrupted the livestream of the Hugo science fiction awards. The award show included clips of copyrighted videos, though the algorithm didn’t know that the clips had been authorized.

In early August, an official NASA recording of the Mars landing was blocked hours after the successful landing, due to a rogue DMCA complaint by a news network.

Wikipedia has launched a photo contest that’s expected to be the world’s largest “by a large margin,” the online encyclopedia says.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 encourages people to photograph monuments “of historic and cultural relevance,” upload them to Wikimedia Commons under a free license, and allow Wikipedia to use them. Judges will determine the best photo submissions, narrowing them down to the top ten finalists by mid-October. An international jury will then select the grand prize winner.

Millions of viewers caught Telemundo’s first ever Premios Tu Mundo (Your World Awards), which aired live Aug. 30. To be exact, 1.6 million people tuned in to the awards show. Telenovela stars Rafael Amaya and Gaby Espino hosted the show, the latter of whom took home the prize for #Most Social.

The Republican National Convention also edged onto the charts, no doubt due in large part to actor Clint Eastwood’s invisible Obama speech, which subsequently inspired many a meme and parody. We’ll see what this week’s Democratic National Convention has in store for social TV.

With the exception of Google Fiber, the United States isn’t exactly breaking records when it comes to high-speed Internet policy. The National Broadband Plan, which was released two years ago, says that there should be a minimum level of service of at least 4Mbps for all Americans. Since then, not much has happened.

But across the pond in Ireland, Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte, has recently decided that that’s not nearly enough.

On Thursday, he outlined a new broadband plan for Ireland that puts the United States to shame. He says that half the population, largely in the urban and suburban cores, should have speeds of 70Mbps to 100Mbps, with service of at least 40Mbps to the next 20 percent of the country. Finally, hewrites, there should be a “minimum of 30Mbps for every remaining home and business in the country—no matter how rural or remote.”

The measure in Ireland is part of the European Union’s Digital Agenda for Europe, which, among other things, requires member states to publish national broadband plans by the end of the year to bring a minimum level of 30Mbps service to all citizens by 2020.

In May, the Facebook Mobile application for mobile devices had 488 million users. Four months later, Facebook demonstrates the power of mobile by hitting 543 million monthly active users out of their 955 million strong Facebook community, resulting in a 57% penetration!

Faster Application = Faster Growth?

The application has been often criticized for being too slow and unresponsive, but about two weeks ago, Facebook issued a massive update to its iOS app and it is now much faster and easier to use. Not to mention that iPads finally support Timeline and it looks great on the retina screen. Facebook for Android has also gone through a smaller update resulting in faster photo uploads.

Mobile Platforms – The Biggest Changes

North America continues to be the strongest Facebook Mobile continent with over 161 million monthly active users and South Africa, Nigeria and Japan still rule the ranking of the countries with the highest Facebook Mobile penetration.

The next time Facebook sends you an email about a friend tagging you in a new picture, be cautious — it could be a trap.

A new strain of malware identified by security firm Sophos as Troj/Agent-XNN has been circulating the social networking site, encouraging members to view photos as an attachment. After clicking on the infected link — which is disguised as a Facebook notification email — a ZIP file containing malware allows hackers to gain control over Windows-operated computers.

Although Facebook email notifications typically tell you which friends tagged you in a picture, this malware campaign states “one of your friends added a new photo with you to the album.”

The bulk of the companies here at the Republican National Convention are traditional media firms with dedicated spaces for their reporters to crank out stories about the big event. Then there are Twitter and Facebook. The two social media outfits are sharing a space upstairs and around the corner from a much larger area rented out by Bloomberg.

And why not? More and more, when people look for political information or post politics-related content, they do it on both platforms. The company names are synonymous with social media, and that’s partially why Twitter and Facebook decided to bunk together here at the RNC.

“We’re both here with the same mission. Our goals here are the same – to facilitate open engagement,” said Adam Sharp, who heads up Government, News, and Social Innovation at Twitter. “Obviously our companies have ways in which we compete, but it’s not a zero sum game,” continued Sharp.

Meanwhile Google – one of the only other “non-media” firms here (if it can still be called that) – has taken over a massive space on the main floor of the Tampa Convention Center, complete with primary colored walls, interactive experiences, and a coffee bar dishing out free cappuccinos for the caffeine-quaffing journalists embedded nearby.
