Clicks aren’t the right metric for brand advertisers, Facebook Head of Measurement and Insights Brad Smallwood told the audience at the IAB MIXX Conference in New York today.

Smallwood shared results from recent campaign studies that indicated impressions, reach and frequency were more valuable than clicks. Specifically, 99 percent of sales came from users who saw an ad but did not interact with it. Campaigns that optimized for reach were 70 percent more effective at driving ROI, and campaigns that optimized for frequency had a 40 percent increase in ROI.

MOREFacebook says impressions, reach and frequency matter more than clicks.

The CW Television Network is promoting its fall lineup with a first-of-its kind print insert in the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly. The insert contains a small LCD screen that features looping video and the six latest tweets from @CW_Network beneath the words, “Follow Us Now.” It appears in 1,000 copies distributed across New York and Los Angeles.

“We’re always trying to look at things that are first to market, that are really going to let people know that we are a digital network and that digital media is part of our DNA,” Rick Haskins, executive vice president of marketing and digital programs at the CW, said in a phone interview. The network’s media agency, OMD, pitched the idea to CW, and then Twitter was brought on board to help execute it.

Per Haskins’ description, the ad is powered by a custom-built, smartphone-like Android device with an LED screen and 3G connectivity.

Tweeting is a science; however, a few basic tips will help ensure your Twitter page increases in follower quality. (Did you catch that? Quality, not quantity! More on that later.)

When it comes to Twitter, followers want to read engaging, interesting tweets. If you think of Twitter in terms of a book, readers do not keep reading the same boring books (or tweets) by the same boring authors (or tweeters). For followers, Twitter is just that: reading. For brands, Twitter is a social platform for which interacting with customers is essential, NOT marketing. Twitter is not an advertisement; it’s a conversation.

So, let’s start increasing your Twitter followers.

1) Use Twitter as a Social Outlet, Not a Marketing Tool

Volvo Cars of North America is tapping into the aspirational nature of Pinterest by asking users to describe their ideal road trip in a new campaign it hopes will ultimately present the brand in a new light to a different audience.

This marks Volvo’s first foray into Pinterest and marks the launch of the car manufacturer’s official Pinterest channel.

In the new promotion, Pinterest users who create a pinboard named “Volvo Joyride” through September 26 and pin the Volvo model S60 T5 AWD along with their favorite road trip destination, stops, attractions, outfits, songs, and other items that make up their ideal trip will be entered to win one four-day lease of the aforementioned car. Winners receive additional road trip perks, including a two-night hotel stay and gift cards for gas, food/beverage, clothing, and music.

Three winners will be selected with the most re-pins, likes, and comments.

According to Linda Gangeri, manager of marketing platforms and technologies, Volvo Joyride has over 600 participants to date.

And, so far, Volvo’s new Pinterest page has five boards, 77 pins, and about 775 followers.

Gangeri says Volvo had a soft launch on Pinterest in August.

DudaMobile in February reported that nearly 20% of visits to small business sites led to an immediate call to the business e.g. with click-to-call, with some local businesses skewing much higher e.g., pizzerias at 32%, car services at 27.8%. But businesses have to earn that call with a mobile-friendly site that puts that phone number above the fold and in eyeshot. Google concludes from the new study that non-mobile friendly sites actually damage a company’s reputation: 36% of respondents said they felt like they’ve wasted their time by visiting those sites, and 52% of users said that a bad mobile experience made them less likely to engage with a company.

Pinterest remains a fascinating case study in how it draws such a large number of women to its platform. With its stylized yet simple logo and interface, Pinterest has tailored itself toward females as much as it possibly can, while being as covert as possible, so it’s not construed as too feminine. But subliminally, the signs are all there, as evidenced by its “About” page:

“Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.”

It doesn’t sound like a male-oriented user experience! Pinterest also retains a valuable level of anonymity that doesn’t require a large personal commitment to the community. Compare this with Google+, which is text-heavy and has a busy interface. Entering a social network into the pool at such a relatively late stage, Google needed to exist on its own terms and merits. As such, while it offers a lot of interesting and unique innovations, it requires a deeper understanding in order to get the most out of its vast capabilities.

A Wired magazine panel recently pinpointed the two core problems for females: “the way Google+ works, and the people who are on it.” Research has shown that women much prefer to engage in predominantly female circles, a big reason why Pinterest is a huge opportunity for brands.
