Working in digital media has always been about staying informed. Every new day brings with it a new industry development, whether it’s a corporate merger or the launch of a new marketing platform. Without a doubt, one of the biggest challenges digital agencies face is following the evolution of social marketing.

By now everyone in the business should be an active participant in social media by setting up accounts on social sites, experimenting with new platforms, and building a good list of people to follow on Twitter…but are they? Facing a busy work schedule and urgent client work, many digital marketing professionals don’t have time to read every social media newsletter in their inbox. They have enough on their plates without trying to catch up to an industry that never stops moving. The problem with this is that social media is now a critical part of every digital marketing professional’s work. It doesn’t matter if you’re a project manager, a software engineer, or a senior copywriter: Social media touches every aspect of a digital media campaign.

For the sake of your clients, who rely on your agency to be informed on social trends, you must make social media education a daily part of agency life. Here’s how.

Browser maker Mozilla has patched a bug in the latest major version of Firefox that could have exposed the websites of those using the “Private Browsing” mode.

“Private Browsing,” a feature implemented in most modern browsers, allows users to browse the Web without leaving any trace of the websites visited on the user’s computer.

But shortly after the latest Firefox release was dished out to end-users, a bug report was filed to claim that any site visited while in the privacy-conscious mode “could be found through manual browser cache inspection,” according to Mozilla’s bug-reporting site Bugzilla.

Website addresses, page images, search queries, passwords and cookies — known as cached content — were stored by Firefox 15 when the browser privacy mode was enabled.

We’ve written before about the value of writing your README before your code, but what about when it comes to the actual code? Terse one-liners? Paragraph-long descriptions? How much is enough and when is it too much?

How to comment code is a perennial subject of debate for programmers, one that developer Zachary Voase recently jumped into, arguing that one of the potential flaws with extensive comments (or any comments really) is that they never seem to get updated when the code changes. “We forget,” writes Voase, “overlooking a comment when changing the fundamental behavior of semantics of the code to which it relates.”

Voase thinks the solution is in our text editors, which typically “gray out” comments, fading then into the background so we can focus on the actual code. We ought to do the opposite, he believes: Make the comments jump out. Looking at the visual examples on Voase’s post makes the argument a bit more compelling. Good text editors have configurable color schemes so it shouldn’t be too hard to give this a try and see if it improves your comments and your code.

Another approach is to treat comments as a narrative. Dave Winer recently mentioned comments in passing, writing about the benefits of using an outliner to handle comments since it makes it easy to show and hide them:

Fox is to offer movie downloads up to three weeks before the films arrive on disc and in video-on-demand services in a bid to boost digital sales.

The studio’s scheme will take place in the US, and push product – starting with Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel, Prometheus – through the UltraViolet cloud movie service.

Prometheus will be offered to UV users in the States on 18 September – folk waiting for the DVD or Blu-ray won’t get it until 11 October, which is when the film will also be made available to video-on-demand services, such as Netflix. The download will cost less too, though by how much will depend on the extent to which retailers discount a given title’s discs.

Fox executives told the New York Times that the studio will offer early, lower-priced sales on all of its forthcoming films for an indefinite period to give it time to assess the scheme’s impact.

The New York Times yesterday reported that Apple is negotiating with record labels for a Pandora-like service, and calls it a move that “could shake up the growing field of internet radio.” The service would customize music to users’ tastes – like Pandora does. Just like Pandora, Apple’s offering would carry advertising, but through Apple’s iAd platform. Terms of the deal are unclear (e.g., if Apple would share ad revenue with labels or pay them through a licensing fee). Also unclear, whether or not the service will be ad supported and free, or with an ad-free subscription offering (which Pandora offers for $36).

Pandora is probably one of the five biggest mobile ad businesses in the US, asBusinessInsider describes; but still struggles with how to sell ads profitably. As the company said in an investor call earlier this week, “To date, we have not been able to generate additional revenue from our advertising products as rapidly as we have been able to grow our listener hours on mobile.” In short – it has all the listeners it wants, but struggles to monetize that listenership.

But, it tries hard.

Assuming you already have a Twitter account dedicated to your small business, you should also be investing in hashtags as part of your social media strategy.

But let’s back up a bit, in case you’re unsure what a hashtag even is in the first place. Designated by a number sign (#), the hashtag is paired with a word or phrase to perform a variety of functions. Twitter users attach hashtags to tweets as search mechanisms, categorizing tools and marketing tactics.

In your business’ case, you may choose to attach a hashtag, such as #smallbiz, or even your brand’s name itself, as #nike might do. This improves the chance that other Twitter users will find your tweet in targeted Twitter searches. But hashtags also streamline your own processes. For instance, you may ask users to include a unique hashtag in their own tweets as part of your newest Twitter marketing campaign. Throughout your campaign, the hashtag files tweets for easy search and organization within Twitter.com.

Now that you’re familiar with the basic hashtag concept, let’s apply principles specific to small businesses. Follow these five tips to improve your brand’s hashtag strategy.

Adobe officially launched a new suite of marketing tools on Thursday called Adobe Social, which is intended to help users better measure and understand the return on investment they get from their social media campaigns.

With Adobe Social, marketers can monitor mentions for their brand on Facebook and Twitter, find out which customers are the key influencers on each of these networks and track how much revenue is being generated from specific social media campaigns and posts. The platform also makes it easier to target ads to certain audiences, personalize a website based on how the user interacts with it and even build apps for Facebook, effectively making it an all-in-one marketing tool for companies.

The company demoed some of these features at an event in Salt Lake City earlier this year, but Adobe Social has only been available in beta to a small group of customers since then. Starting today, the platform is available to the general public for purchase.

Every startup dreams of building a thriving Facebook page, with millions of loyal, engaged fans who actively take part in contests, post comments, and share regularly — creating a viral buzz. But if you’ve managed a Facebook page, you know it’s not that easy and at times can be extremely challenging.

Here are five techniques that I’ve used to turbo-charge our Facebook strategy; we’ve grown to 14,000 fans with very little advertising, almost doubled our weekly total reach over the last 10 days (up 98 percent), and recently doubled our “people talking about this” measurement, increasing it by 113 percent.

Create a leader board and recognize your top fans

In addition to your ordinary posts and photos, it’s key to enable your fans to create a community. Give them a reason to interact with your page. We implemented an app powered by Booshaka called “Top Fans Pro.”

Twitter has launched a new tool that enables you to embed interactive timelines on any website. According to the company, the tool provides the means to place any public timeline on any page. “With one line of HTML you can deliver any account’s tweets, favourites, a list, search query or hashtag directly to your website,” explained Twitter’s Sylvain Carle.

The timelines work much like the Twitter website, providing the means for visitors to reply, retweet, follow and tweet directly, but without leaving the page.

Recent finding by Nielsen on travel related app usage show that U.S. Android and iOS users spent 95 percent of their time accessing travel information from travel apps, versus only 5 percent from the mobile Web during JUne 2012.. This discrepancy was largely driven by Google Maps—the top Travel category app and mobile website during June—which accounted for 78 percent of all mobile time spent on Travel.
