Anything that can boast a 112% higher engagement is worth a second look. That is just one of the figures that Simply Measured (the social media analytics firm) released yesterday. Since February, two more brands from the Interbrand Top 100 list (Xerox and Nike) have activated pages, bringing the total to 64 of those 100. (The top 10 for Google+ engagement include Nike, Coke, Starbucks, Adidas and Ferrari, among others.) Also since February, average weekly circler engagement is up 112%, and content engagement is up 65%. Finally, 22% of the brands now have circler counts over 100,000, up from 13% including Nike, and after just two months. So it appears brands are prioritizing Google+ and trying to capitalize on participation.

But, as Josh Sternberg of Digiday describes, smart brands actively strategize on Google+, rather than treat it as yet another presence they need to fill. ESPN for example has 1.2 million Google+ followers. Sports fans like rich media, and ESPN knows that, so relies on high-quality images and videos of all-things sport, and interactions with fans.

The news media seems not to know what to make of it, and the highly-circulated Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today have piddling followings on Google+ compared to their other social platforms.

The 60 new templates are designed for work, home, school, fun, holiday, and more. Examples of some of the types of templates include resumes, newsletters, recipes, photo sharing, and legal invoices.

Google has worked on vast improvements to its word processing program since it launched in 2007, including the addition of more than 200 updates to the core apps suite in the past year. These changes are apparently causing some users to make the switch from Microsoft Word.

Other Google Docs announcements from today include more options for inserting images into documents, charts in spreadsheets now have support for minor gridlines and customization, and users can set the default page size for new documents.

Within hours of Google launching its new online storage service, the terms and service have come under heavy fire by the wider community for being able to potentially stifle innovation and harm the users Google seeks to serve.

After Dropbox and Microsofts SkyDrive — the two largest online storage services on the Web — Google was late to the party by a number of years. While Google needed no advertising to drum up support, what may hold back uptake is that as per the terms and conditions of using the product, the files you upload to the Google Drive product undergoes a rights transition.

A quick analysis of Googles terms of service shows how the search company owns the files you upload the minute they are submitted, and can in effect do anything it wants to your files — and thats final. But there is a small catch.Heres what the terms say:

Tuesday we heard rumors that Google will soon be launching Google Drive — its own cloud service — and now we have an exclusive screen shot of the Google Drive interface that seems to confirm that rumor.

A Google employee giving a presentation at a university in Brazil Tuesday appears to have accessed that presentation via Google Drive. Pedro Henrique Moschetta was at the keynote, and sent Mashable a shot of what may be Google’s cloud service in action.

“Some friends and I were watching a seminar with a Google employee called João Itaqui Google Enterprise director in Brazil here at Universidade Feevale Feevale University in Novo Hamburgo, RS — Brazil when we noticed he had an option called “Drive” in his Google toolbar.” says Moschetta. “I think he, as a senior employee, has early access to Google Drive before public announcement or release.”

Google‘s foray into personal cloud storage, Google Drive, is about to launch next week, according to a report from The Next Web.

Citing a draft release from one of Google’s launch partners for the service, TNW claims the service will initially be free, giving out 5 GB of storage to every user.

The details on how, exactly, Google Drive will integrate with your PC are scarce; “desktop folder” integration on Mac and Windows machines is mentioned, but not explained.

The launch date could very well be real. In February 2012, a report (with screenshots) said the service is already live for some users, which usually means the official launch is coming soon.

Facebook Rolls Out Bigger Profile Images, Days After Google+: “Over the course of the last week, Facebook has started to roll out a small improvement to Facebook profiles, increasing the size of a user’s profile picture on their Timeline, a move that comes just days after Google updated Google+ profiles to sport a larger photo.

Previously, a Timeline photo measured 130 x 125 pixels, overlaying a user’s Timeline Cover image. The image is a smaller version of a user’s profile image, which can be displayed in full when a visitor clicks it.

However, as Emanuele Bartolomucci and a number of Twitter users have noticed, Facebook’s profile images now measure 166 x 160 pixels.

Considering how strong a leader Google is, when it comes to cloud-based productivity solutions Google Apps, its a little surprising that the company hasnt introduced a bona fide cloud storage service yet.

Google is expected to officially announce and launch an online storage service dubbed Google Drive, or GDrive, as soon as the first week of April, according to GigaOm and its sources.Credit: Google

Coincidentally, registration for Google I/O, Googles annual conference for developers in San Francisco, kicked off this morning. It would make sense, if Google waited until June to officially introduce Google Drive for added publicity and details, if it is going to be as big a venture as we might expect.

If the reports are true, Google is expected to kick off GDrive by offering 1GB of storage space for free, with fees for extra storage space thereafter.

We’ve been hearing reports of a Google Nexus Tablet for months now, however the reports are suggesting it may be coming sooner, rather than later. Android and Me claims to have solid sources within Asus that report a $149 quad-core Nexus tablet is a “done deal”, however The Verge is suggesting it might be closer to $199. Either way this is a great price for a 7-inch pure Google tablet, and will be an important step if they are going to protect the Google marketplace from the Amazon onslaught. That is of course, assuming the rumors are true.

The Web giant has created Google+ Pages, a place where businesses can add their own content so customers and fans can connect with them.”So far Google+ has focused on connecting people with other people,” Google Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra wrote in a blog post. “But we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about–from local businesses to global brands–so today were rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.”

Brand pages are coming to Google+ “imminently,” according to Google’s senior vice president of engineering, Vic Gundotra. “Not days…a little bit longer than days,” he said.

Gundotra, who shared the stage at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco today with Google co-founder Segrey Brin, said there has been “overwhelming interest” in this feature. For users who want to have a non-real identity, Gundotra said that Google+ would support pseudonyms.
